This piece explores how jewellery can evoke a sense of luxury through design, not just material value. By combining sterling silver with mirror foil, the Mirror Ring plays with perception - transforming an inexpensive, lightweight material into something visually striking and refined.
From the outset, the goal was to move away from traditional ring forms and create a piece that draws attention to the entire hand. After initial sketches and paper prototypes, I developed a bold, angular design language that proved ideal for enhancing the foil’s reflective properties.
The ring consists of a 10x50 mm silver rectangle, carefully cut and polished, with folded mirror foil inserted and joined to the ring rail. The contrast between stability and fragility, permanence and disposability, invites viewers to reconsider what defines value in jewellery.
Beyond aesthetics, the project embraces sustainability. Mirror foil, unlike conventional gemstones, is recyclable and has a far lower ecological footprint. The Mirror Ring thus stands as both a sculptural statement and a conscious design choice - highlighting how elegance can emerge from simplicity and thoughtful material use.
